Introduction
Initia, a non-profit organization, was established in Brussels the 7th of October 1999 on the initiative of Jan Knops. The creation coincided with the event Brussels 2000, European Capital of Culture. In this inspiring context, Initia started its project. An artistic and philosophic project that has resulted the past years in several exhibitions, publications and educational offerings on practical philosophy. Starting from a social commitment, themes such as ‘place, freedom, diversity, transitoriness, autism and poverty’ take shape in Initia’s activities. After years of experience in practice, study and research, Initia could establish a distinct profile that proves to be both original and viable.
What is
Initia produces, in a professional and autonomous way, projects on the field of contemporary visual arts, art education and practical philosophy. Moreover, she puts her artistic and philosophic activities within a social context. While Initia is part of this context, she attempts at the same time to free herself from it. She charges herself with the task to question things that seem obvious and break through the artificiality of the social sphere. Initia wants to attract, confront, fascinate and invite to reflection. She involves what initially is beyond someone’s scope of vision and frame of thought, to make it possible to change existing viewpoints and get in touch with one’s own vital possibilities.
What does Initia do
The artistic activities include the production and presentation of art, the publication of catalogues and courses of art education. The activities on the field of practical philosophy consist of educational workshops and publications.
